Our inaugural masterpoint experience! Congratulations to everyone on a successful game and to the top pairs for their impressive performances. For most of you, what you see below will be your first experience in viewing the results of a duplicate bridge game. If you're interested in how this duplicate bridge scoring business goes, read the next three (numbered) paragraphs; if you're not interested, skip 'em. As you see, the results appear in three different forms: (1) What we call the Press Sheet, or Press and Recap. This includes information about the game in general and specifics about a number of things: what an average expected score for the entire game was (AVE); what the best possible score on each deal (or board) was (the TOP); the number of strata (in this game, three--A, B, and C); what the upper masterpoint (MP) limits were for the pairs in each of the strata (based on the number of masterpoints already won by each player at the beginning of the game [for almost all of you, zero]); and the number of pairs in each strat. The results are then arrayed for each direction--North-South first, and then East-West. For each direction, you see how you and your partner compared with the other pairs in your direction, in terms of both your total score (Score) and how that translates into your percentage (Pct) of the total possible points (matchpoints) that you could have won . In this game, your percentage is equal to your Score divided by 24--twice the AVErage score of 12.0; that number 24 is also equal to the number of boards most pairs played (8) multiplied by the TOP score possible for each board (3). There's also information about the number of ACBL masterpoints that the top pairs won as a result of their performance in this game. Below this is the Recap: the scores (plus or minus) that each pair received on each board, and (above those scores) the matchpoints won by each pair on each board. (Matchpoints aren't the same thing as masterpoints; I'll explain matchpoint scoring in a few weeks.) (2) A Summary for each pair, showing which boards you played (BRD), who the dealer (DLR) was and what the vulnerability (VUL) was on each of them, the number of the pair (VS) against whom you played each board, what the score (RESULT) was for each board (a positive result if you and your partner made your contract or defeated your opponents' contract; a negative result if your opponents made their contract or defeated yours), and then the number of matchpoints (SCORE) that you received for each board. The Summary should agree with information that you entered on the private score that you and your partner kept during the game; if it doesn't, then you should bring any discrepancies to my attention. (3) Finally, the Traveling Scores--a display, board by board, of the scores achieved each time a board was played (a score for either the North-South pair or the East-West pair), the number of matchpoints those scores translate into, and the pairs associated with those scores and matchpoints. Again, if the three previous paragraphs are TMI (too much information) for you, don't fret about it; just play bridge and enjoy yourself!
